The San Francisco Bay Area is looking to be just that...the electric vehicle capital of the US! Three mayors in the area have entered into a public-private partnership with Better Place to install thousands of charging ports and hundreds of battery exchange stations in the Bay Area by 2012. This could be just the thing needed to push car manufacturers to more electric vehicles. Read more about this plan in this article from Christian Science Monitor.
At this time, demand for EVs out strips demand, however soon the supply will catch up and then we will have a lot more EVs on the road that will need recharging on the go so it makes sense to have a network already in place when that happens.
