What could be better than an electric bike? The obvious answer is a regular bike that doesn't use a battery or rely on the electric grid. I agree, but for many of us it could help make the choice to bicycle commute 10+ miles with hills in hot weather vs. driving a car.
I purchased an electric bike retrofit kit when I first moved to DC a few years back. It was simply divine. The ability to travel further, faster, ascend hills, carry loads of groceries in my backpack, leap buildings in a single bound, and keep up with traffic really changed the way I used a bicycle.
Sadly, the motor shorted out after only 2 years. I suppose that is what I get for buying the cheapest first generation model possible. It does appear that technology is changing rapidly and linked below is the newest version I have seen. While riding a regular bike is ALWAYS better, I'm going to keep my eye out for an affordable QUALITY electric bike.
Check out this new model that is just about to hit the market: http://www.ultramotor.com/us/about_us/

Yeah well living in N Rlington means attacking the Rlington hill - Curtis Trail up 66. For the first time in years, I tried to tackle it 2nite. Me and some other 900 year old guy biked up the hill at about 2 miles per hour. He made if first and kept trucking. I had to sit on the bench on the top of the hill. It was one thing to say "biking is better" a decade and a few pant sizes ago. Now, a little electric boost could mean the diff between biking - and caving into the ever enticing 4 wheeled shiny metal boxes.
